I've been a Pat Conroy fan for decades and read almost all of his books; Lords of Discipline, The Great Santini, Prince of TIdes and others. Mr. Conroy has typically focused on dysfunctional family relationships and the southern psyche. South of Broad started out in the same vein and I initially enjoyed the story even though some of it stretched the imagination. Sadly, about halfway through the novel, Mr. Conroy took a detour into the dark side and the story line became progressively darker and vulgar until I finally gave up on it altogether. It's a shame to see such an accomplished writer fall to this level. I wanted to love this but immediately the dialogue put me off, as well as the purple prose. I felt like a fourteen year old ghost writer wrote this. I was getting ready for another visit to my favorite place, Charleston, and I thought this would get me in the mood but no, it was a huge turn off. None of the characters was appealing in the least, I didn't buy that high school was enough of a tie to bind them, and I didn't like any of them. Several of the plot lines just didn't seem plausible. The dialogue was torture. Very disappointing.
